STORY OF TON BOSUA:
Hello dear friends,
First a brief introduction.
I started with the pigeon sport in 1983, when I still lived in Papendrecht.
That was not surprising, because at that time my father and brother Kees had been involved with the pigeon sport for a long time.
Of course pigeons (and accessories) from Kees came to me.
At that time the children were still small and I did not have the time, opportunity and space to seriously practice the sport, but the first step had been made.
In 1994 I moved to my current address and made a new start there.
Even then it was trial and error with the pigeons as I had irregular working hours as a truck driver.
I got divorced in 2011 and the pigeon sport meant very little to me for a few years. I wasn't really working on it, but I did buy some pigeons here and there.
Slowly the interest returned and I started working on the hobby again.
My brother Kees looked at it for a few years but came to the conclusion that it would be a very long way.
In 2016, Kees his good friend (Zhang Chaodong) from China visited him and they made me a special offer.
That proposal meant that they wanted to help me to make a big step in the pigeon sport in the short term.
I would then make a whole new start with only youngsters from Kees, a complete round of the breeders would come to me.
But it didn't stop there, once again a young came from each couple.
In total I had three youngsters from each couple.
I did not have to think long about that and I accepted that offer with both hands.
I then got rid of all the pigeons that were present in 2016 to make room for the new colony.
In 2017 I put these youngsters in the basket every week.
This was also a condition, they all had to be played.
A good pedigree was not good enough to possibly end up in the breeding loft.
First there had to be performance, then there is only room in the breeding loft.
And of course, as with every pigeon fancier, there are also a number of them left behind, but that is selection, let's think.
This year (2018) I kept everything that looked somewhat like a decent pigeon and raced it on double widowhood.
There were quite a few handsome pigeons such as Rico and Flip.
And actually the results were better than I expected, in the end it was a team of pigeons that had not been kept for results as a youngster.
In the spring of 2018, some old breeding couples of Kees came this way.
We will try it out next year.
Kees also got some eggs from the kites in 2018 and these youngsters are also basketted every week.
In the meantime the youngsters' flights are in full swing and that is going quite well compared to other years, not super yet, but it has been a few years ago that they came home so well.
But as with other fanciers, pigeons stay away from training and flights, so the young pigeons team has now been halved.
I can be brief about the guidance of the pigeons. I use Kees's feeding system.
That means that I mix a few bales of feed so that they almost always get the same feed.
No loading or unloading, but always enough.
After the flight electrolytes (Avipharm) and if it is going to be heavier then as extra some peanuts.
During the racing season every 3 weeks, a 3-day cure against the yellow, if necessary something for the respiratory tract (only on the advice of the vet), the mandatory vaccinations of course and when young also vaccinations against smallpox with a brush.
Years ago I had the youngsters vaccinated with a cocktail of paramixo / smallpox, that was once but never again, the young bird season was actually over before it even started.
If necessary, I will certainly not hesitate to visit a pigeon doctor, they have eventually learned for it.
Grit and pecking stone fresh every day, I attach great importance to this.
The lofts are simple and self-made, since last year the young pigeons loft has been adapted, now it is as with Kees but Madurodam format.
Since the racing loft of the cocks is satisfactory in my opinion, I will be flying on a copy of this loft with the hens next year.
The youngsters are darkened but not illuminated, darkening from the beginning of April until the longest day has proved sufficient.
In a few weeks the season will be over, then we will take stock !!
For now I will leave it at this.
Update 8 Nov. 2018
The season has come to an end for a while and we can now take stock again.
The young bird season has actually not turned out to be what I expected.
In the beginning it went pretty well until problems arose again.
No coli this year but problems with the eyes again, and this time more persistent than other years, even a few weeks ago I saw a few with a big eye.
The moulting also threw a spanner in the works for the youngsters, despite the darkening.
On the last flight when we got home, the feathers flew around.
That will therefore not happen next year, darkening or lighting a little longer, I am not sure yet.
Despite the fact that it did not go entirely according to plan, there is still a pigeon with a 1st and 2nd prize and another with a 1st and 3rd prize in the club.
For next year I have a nice addition for the old pigeons, but as is known, it is always a question of waiting.
I have never been in favor of double widowhood, but it has certainly not disappointed me and will do it again next year.
Now is the time to adjust something else and do some maintenance, most of it is already over
The hens get a different home, it is easier, but whether it is better will tell.
This year I will also put breeding pigeons together at the beginning of December so that this year I also have some youngsters that are older than previous years.
For me, 2018 was a very good year, even though it was not a success with the one day long distance.
Thanks to Kees and Mr. Zhang
After I started again in 2017 with only pigeons from my brother, I of course started with the youngsters that year.
Things did not go quite as it should with the youngsters, but I think there is still some work to be done on the loft and the system.
Despite everything, the boy occasionally showed what they can do.
The best results were:
Asse-Zellik 350 pigeons 1st-6th-11th-22nd-23rd-27th etc.
Arras 339 pigeons 4th-8th-14th-18th etc.
Pont St Max 211 pigeons 3rd-5th-6th-9th-14th etc.
Duffel 361 pigeons 10th-12th-13th-14th-17th etc.
Arras 341 pigeons 5th-15th-18th-21st etc.
Peronne 278 pigeons 6th-10th-13th-14th-18th etc.
Peronne 294 pigeons 1st-6th-7th etc.
The 2017 season started with the 1st prize and ended with it.
On to 2018.
The first year with old pigeons made it exciting.
How will brother's pigeons manifest themselves in my loft.
This season, too, they participated in the top of the results from the first flight.
But even this season my system with the old pigeons is not yet optimal, but the results were still quite promising.
My brother's pigeons turn out to be very easy to win a first prize.
2018 brought the following excellent results:
Asse-Zellik 402 pigeons 1st and 2nd prize
Asse-Zellik 1342 pigeons 2nd and 4th prize in the district
Quievrain 402 pigeons 1st and 2nd prize
